A fire this morning destroyed a two-storey house at Crabwood Creek, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), leaving a family of nine homeless.
Among those affected are seven children aged 15, 14, 8, 7, 5, 3 and 2.
At the time of the fire at around 11:30hrs, Sheneza Yusuf, a cancer patient, and all her children were at home.
Yusuf told this publication that she was in a hammock in the yard when her 15-year-old informed her that something was burning.
Upon investigating, the woman noticed smoke emanating from the fuse box in the upper flat of the building.
“I just tell my kids them to run because the fire start upstairs, I didn’t get to save nothing, just couple papers, that’s all,” the woman related.
“All my children them school items destroyed,” she added.
According to the 41-year-old woman, she and her family had been occupying the house for the past eight years.
At the time of the fire, her husband, a construction worker, was at work.
Investigations are ongoing.
