Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly man, who reportedly fell onto the roadway at Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD), causing him to be crushed by a passing minibus.
Dead is Ograsane Samaroo of Stewartville, WCD. The incident occurred at around 19:15hrs on Monday along the Leonora Public Road.
Police said the driver of the minibus, BXX 6727, alleged that he was proceeding along the roadway when he observed a motorcar in a stationary position on the northern footpath.
The bus driver further claimed that the driver’s side door was opened and the victim was attempting to enter the car when he lost his balance and fell onto the roadway.
At this point, the bus’ left-side front wheel ran over the man.
Samaroo was subsequently picked up by police ranks and rushed in an unconscious condition to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A breathalyzer test on the 54-year bus driver showed no trace of alcohol. He, nevertheless, remains in custody as the investigation continues.
