Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh has announced that three new quarries are expected to begin production this year.
Making the disclosure during his presentation of Budget 2026 on Monday, Dr Singh said the government’s support of the quarrying industries is guided by the goal of ensuring reliable and sustainable supply of aggregates that can keep pace with the country’s current construction boom.
“In recent years, expanded capacity in sand and stone quarrying has been supported by the issuance of new licences and other investment in the industries,” he noted.
At the end of 2025 there were 18 operational quarries, with expanded operations expected this year.
Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat had revealed that national quarrying production has increased from approximately 650,000 tonnes in 2020 to nearly 5.5 million tonnes in 2025.
