Police are investigating a fatal accident which occurred on Thursday March 26, 2026 about 13:50 hrs, on Rome Access Road, East Bank Demerara, involving motor lorry GAK 7143 with trailer attached TYY 9718, driven by a 30-year-old male of Little Abary, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara and pedal cyclist Shawn Roache, a 24-year-old construction worker of Agricola, East Bank Demerara (deceased).
Initial enquiries revealed that the motor lorry with trailer attached was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of Rome Access Road behind the pedal cyclist, who was also proceeding west along the southern driving lane of the said road. While in the vicinity of Farm/Supply, the driver reportedly overtook the pedal cyclist, and the left-side rear wheel of the trailer came into contact with the rear wheel of the cycle, causing the cyclist to lose control and end up under the trailer, where the wheel ran over his left foot.
As a result of the collision, the pedal cyclist sustained injuries about his body. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned and the cyclist was examined by a doctor on duty attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation and pronounced dead at the scene.
The body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver found no trace of alcohol in his breath.
The driver is presently in police custody assisting with investigations.
Investigations are ongoing.
