19-Y-O jockey killed on track during horse race

A young jockey was killed on the track at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice, during the Guyana Cup 2025 horse race meet earlier today.

Dead is 19-year-old Kishawn Pereira, who was riding horse, ‘Blinding Light,’ in each class race over a distance of 7 furlongs when the animal slipped and fell, throwing him to the ground while another horse, American Traveller, was at its heels.

American Traveller, which was being ridden by jockey Barrett Ramnarine, ended up running over Pereira.

The incident happened between the 3rd and 4th furlong poles.

Nine horses took the starting gate and by the time they reached the 5th furlong pole, three riders were down. The race which was won by a horse named, Emotional Damage, saw three horses coming in jockey less.

Meanwhile, some racing fans are calling for a full investigation into the incident with some complaining about the state of the track while others voiced concerns over the lighting conditions.
