11 families receive new homes under Lethem Housing Support Initiative

For Judith Browne, today marked a truly memorable moment. Just days before celebrating her birthday, she received what she described as the perfect gift, the keys to her very own home.

One of the beneficiaries of the Lethem Housing Support Initiative

Browne was among eleven families who were handed the keys to their new homes under the Government of Guyana’s Lethem Housing Support Initiative. The houses were officially presented by Minister of Housing, the Hon. Collin Croal, in the presence of Regional Housing Officer Ms. Teshana McDonald and staff of the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA).

For another proud beneficiary, Ann Paulino, the day represented the end of years of living with relatives. Paulino, a mother of four and grandmother, said the new home brings stability and independence for her family.

More importantly, she expressed joy at finally having a home she can one day pass on to her grandson, something she described as deeply meaningful for her family’s future.

Each of the homes measures approximately 550 square feet and includes two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen area, and a bathroom facility. Valued at about $3 million, the homes are made more affordable through a $1 million building-materials subsidy provided by the Ministry of Housing and Water. Beneficiaries finance the remaining cost through mortgages.

The houses were also constructed using locally sourced materials, providing economic support to several communities within the region and contributing to local development.

Meanwhile, the Lethem Housing Support Initiative is already advancing into its second phase. Construction is currently underway on another 45 homes within the Tract CHPA Housing Scheme, with an additional 55 houses expected to begin in the coming weeks.
