[www.inewsguyana.com] – A woman from Smithfield, New Amsterdam, Berbice was on Monday sentenced to three years in prison after she pleaded guilty to the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
However, in a surprising turn of events a man who was also charged with the same offence along with the woman was placed on $100,000 bail.
Thirty – year – old Samuel Brown pleaded not guilty to the offence which alleged himself and 42 – year – old Roxanne Smith on October 3, at Canaru Junction, Mahdia had in their possession 499 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the facts of the Prosecution, on the day in question police acting on information went to a popular apartment building in Canaru area and conducted a search in the room of Smith.
Upon their investigation, hanging in the corner of the room was a multi-colored haversack.
Further investigation revealed a red and white plastic bag containing what appeared to be weeds, seeds and stems; suspected to be cannabis inside of the haversack.
They two accused were told of the officer’s suspicion and the narcotics was weight in their presence.
Magistrate McLennan after taking into consideration the statements by both the Prosecution and those of defendants, sentenced Roxanne Smith to 3 years in prison and fined her $748,500.
As for Brown, he was granted bail in the sum of $100,000 dollars.
His next court appearance is set for October 29
