A West Ruimveldt man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts charged with assault on Tuesday.
Andy Micou, 45, of Lot 160 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, pleaded guilty with an explanation to the charge, which stated that on March 11, he unlawfully assaulted Shamwattie Arjun with intent to cause bodily harm.
The prosecution’s case stated that the Virtual Complainant (VC) is the reputed wife of the defendant and has been living with him for the past 20 years. They have five children together the court was told.
On the day in question at their home, the defendant, who was under the influence of alcohol, dealt the VC several blows to her head with a bottle.
As a result of the blows, the VC suffered multiple lacerations about her face. The matter was reported to the Ruimveldt Police Station and the defendant was arrested.
When given the opportunity to speak in court, the defendant admitted to the offence, pleading with the Magistrate to “please give me another chance, me nah go do it again”.
The Magistrate ordered the defendant to apologise to the VC and instructed that he seek counselling in substance abuse and anger management from the Social Protection Ministry.
He was ordered to perform 150 hours of community service to be completed on or before May 20, 2016, or face a default of 18 months in prison. (Guyana Times)
