[wwww.inewsguyana.com] – A man who hails from Parfait Harmonie and who works at a mining company in Linden was on Friday remanded to prison after he was placed before Magistrate Ann McLennan to answer to the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that Shawn Nurse of Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara on October 08, 2015 at McKenzie, Linden had in his possession 901 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Nurse pleaded not guilty the offence.
According to the facts of the Prosecution, a Police-Commander at the McKenzie Police Station had hauled in a mini-bus into the said Police Station compound and asked everyone to claim their belongings from within the bus.
The Prosecution explained that officers witnessed the accused claiming a certain bag.
A search on the bag by Officers revealed inside what appeared to be leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis.
Nurse was called aside and was told of their suspicion.
The items were then tested and proved to be the alleged 901 grams of cannabis which led to him being arrested and charged.
The Attorney for the accused, in an effort to seek lenience from the court and a reasonable bail for his client, explained to the Magistrate that the procedure of claiming and searching bags at the said Police Station is not confined to any particular system of order.
He said that anyone could pass or handle anyone’s bag while vehicles or bags are being checked at the compound and added that it may have been the case with his client.
Nonetheless, Magistrate McLennan remanded Shawn Nurse to prison.
He will make his next court appearance in the Linden Magistrate’s Court on October 28.
