Lakeram Sirkissoon, 16, is now dead after he was struck by a drunk driver on the West Coast Berbice Public Road.
Sirkissoon of No. 7 Village, WCB, was riding a bicycle on the No. 6 Public Road around 21:45h on Monday when he was hit by a car driven by a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Corporal.
Police say the driver alleged that while proceeding west along the southern side of the No. 6 Public Road, he saw a pedal cyclist cycling across the road from the northern to the southern side. The driver claims that on seeing this, he tried to pull right to avoid a collision, but despite his effort, he collided into the rear of the said pedal cyclist.
As a result of the collision the pedal cyclist fell to the road surface where he received injuries about his body.
He was picked up by public-spirited citizens in a unconscious state and taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was treated for head injuries and later transferred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital. He was admitted there in a serious condition and eventually succumbed to his injuries.
His mother identified his body this morning around 08:30h, the police said.
At the time of the accident, there were three persons in the car – the driver, another male and a female. They were all taken for treatment and sent away.
The police said statements were taken and notice of intended prosecution served on the driver. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the army rank and showed reading of .70 and .76 micrograms of alcohol in his blood. The legal limit is .35 and below.
