(CMC) A 33 -year-old man will re-appear in court on September 4 after he was charged with murder following the death of a 44-year-old woman whom he allegedly set on fire earlier this month for refusing to have sex.
Monique Clarke, a mother of two, died last Tuesday at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient since the August 13 incident.
Police had initially charged Pedro Ashton with attempted murder when he first appeared in court on August 15, but upgraded the charge to murder when he made his appearance before Magistrate Bertie Pompey at the Kingstown Magistrate’s court over the weekend.
Ashton was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded in custody until September 4, when he will appear before the Serious Offences Court for the setting of a date for the commencement of a preliminary inquiry.
Clarke had suffered second- and third-degree burns to 85 per cent of her body.
