[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Venezuelan national appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with the unlawful possession of a firearm.
Joel Pereira Rodriguez pleaded guilty to the offence which noted that on December 3 at Aurora Backdam, Cuyuni River, he had in his possession one .38 snug revolver without being the holder of a firearm license.
He was remanded until December 11. Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru told the court that on the day in question at Aurora Backdam, the suspect was in his boat when he was approached by one John Gobin, whom he owed $36,000.
An argument ensued between the two parties and he pointed a gun in Gobin’s direction. Hence, the victim became afraid and reported the matter to the police.
Mangru said that around 14:00 hrs the police contacted the defendant and a search was conducted on his person when a gun was discovered in his right side pants pocket. He was told of the offence and was subsequently arrested and charged.
Meanwhile, the accused told the Court that he had the revolver because of the work he does. When the Chief Magistrate asked the accused his purpose for being in Guyana, he said that he came to work as a boat captain.
