[www.inewsguyana.com] – A vendor of Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara was remanded to prison following a charge possession of marijuana.

Seon McDonald pleaded not guilty to the offence before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. It is alleged that on Saturday, June 7 at Umaka Water Front, Mabaruma, he had in his possession 741 grammes of marijuana.

Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru said on the day in question, the defendant was in the front seat of a speedboat with a yellow and black John Sport haversack.

A subsequent search was carried out and leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found.

According to the defendant, he was on the boat with about five other persons and the Police took all of them to the station. He said no bag was found on his person and yet the Police charged only him.

However, the Chief Magistrate refused bail on the grounds that no special reason was given to the Court for pretrial liberty to be granted and the case was transferred to Mabaruma Court for August 18.
