(CMC) The United States Coast Guard on Sunday repatriated 67 Haitians, whose boat was intercepted about 51 kilometres north-east of Turtle Island on the north coast of the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
The Coast Guard said that since October 1, approximately 200 Haitians have tried to migrate illegally to the United States by sea and has renewed its warning to people not to attempt the dangerous journey since many have lost their lives on previous occasions.
“The Caribbean and the Florida Straits are dangerous and ruthless for migrants who travel illegally in overcrowded boats…,” warned Captain Jason Ryan of the 7th Coast Guard District.
According to the Coast Guard, between from September to October this year, 1,869 Haitian immigrants attempted to illegally reach US shores by sea.
