A mother of seven was reportedly hacked to death by her reputed husband on Monday evening at Rose Hall Town, in what is regarded by neighbours and friends of the couple, as a tragic end to years of abuse by the man.
Dead is Bhagmati Etwaru, 50, of Lot 196 Mangrove Street, Rose Hall Town, Corentyne.
The suspect has since been arrested.
Reports indicate that the woman and her reputed husband had been drinking together earlier in the day.
According to an eyewitness, his friend Desmond Gordon (suspect) told him that he was going to kill his wife and then take his own life. “So I try to stop him and put he to sit down on the step to buy time. The neighbour call the police and they say is man and wife story.”
According to the eyewitness, the couple had serious domestic problems and on several occasions in the past, Gordon had been very abusive and even threatened to kill the woman.
According to reports, on the day in question, the couple had a disagreement over the woman’s drinking habits. The man then locked the woman in the house, and at about 17:00 she reportedly jumped over the verandah in a bid to escape.
“He pick up a piece of wood and start beat she. Then I see he come out the gate with blood on he clothes ad he tell me that he finish she off,” the eyewitness claimed.
Etwaru was found in a room under the small wooden house with blood gushing from her neck.
The suspect was apprehended by residents one street away and handed over to police.
The couple had been together for eight years.
Etwaru leaves to mourn seven children. The couple did not have any children together.
