[www.inewsguyana.com] – Eighteen year old Threeson Gittens of Richmond Housing Scheme, Essequibo Coast was killed early Thursday, February 05 after tons of paddy fell on him while he was cleaning a silo at Caricom Rice Mills.
The teenager, who was working on the 7:00hrs to 15: 00hrs shift, was cleaning the silo which was used to store parboiled paddy when a cone from another nearby cylinder ruptured, sending tons of paddy over him.
One eyewitness said that the paddy buried Gitten alive. Efforts made by coworkers to rescue the young man proved futile since he had already succumbed by the time his body was discovered.
One man said that it took a while before they could have found the body under the paddy. Relatives of Gittens, who rushed to the scene, said they saw workers bailing out paddy from the silo.
The young man worked with the company for over a year. Police are investigating.
