[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Police Constable was shot dead, reportedly execution style, in his North Sophia home on Monday evening, September 24.
The dead man has been identified as Tactical Services Unit rank, Michael Cumberbatch, 30 years of 111 North Sophia, East Coast Demerara.
According to the now dead police officer’s Sister-in-Law Lizann Hustson, she was asleep in her home, which is situated to the left of Cumberbatch’s house when she was awaken by the sound of two gun shots.
She related that she immediately ran outside where she heard her sister, who is the wife of Cumberbatch screaming.
Meanwhile, residents in the area told iNews that they saw three men going into the dead man’s yard around 21:00hrs. The residents related that they heard an argument between the policeman and the three men moments later, during which they heard the policeman shouting “come out meh yard, come out meh yard.”
The residents said immediately they heard two gun shots rang out and soon after saw the three men running from the premises.
They said no one chased after the men, but rather rushed to the policeman who appeared to have been shot to his neck and chest.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
When iNews arrived on the scene, police investigators were seen questioning residents while others were combing the scene for evidence.
Meanwhile, the wife was said to be in police custody assisting with investigations. When contacted by phone, she said she was not in a position to comment. Cumberbatch leaves to mourn two children.
