An investigation has been launched into an accident which occurred on the Greenwich Park, East Bank Essequibo public road on Wednesday evening, resulting in one man suffering a fractured left knee.
The injured man has been identified as a Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo resident and the driver of motorcar PSS252.
According to Police “D” Division Commander, Rishi Das, on Thursday morning, the incident occurred at around 19:45hrs.
Das said that the driver of PSS252 reported that he was proceeding east on the northern side of the public road, heading home, when an unknown vehicle turned in front of him.
“…and to avoid collision, he swerved from the car and end up into a nearby trench,” the Commander said.
The Tuschen resident was reportedly rescued by public spirited persons and rushed to the Leonora Cottage, before being transferred to the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
He was then treated and sent away.
Police say that a breathalyser test was administered and it was found that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
Meanwhile, last evening, when INews arrived at the scene of the accident- in the vicinity of ‘Danny’s washbay’- the entire area was pitch black and completely wet as it was raining.
Motor vehicle, PSS252 was seen completely mangled, and eyewitnesses disclosed that it was recently pulled out of the trench nearby.
Residents in the area also indicated to this online publication that the injured driver was actually seen racing with another motorcar on the public road, moments before the accident.
“We hear the screeching and the lil ‘badam’, we rush out, we search, we nah see no car…the car went under the water deh,” one man told INews while another added that “them man went speeding. I see this same vehicle and another one racing coming from Parika side.”
Several parts of the PSS motorcar, which was allegedly hit by the other vehicle, were found in the bushes near a lantern post.
