[www.inewsguyana.com] – Fifty – two – year old Peter Alonzo, a caretaker of Umbrella Resort was charged with the offences of assault and abusive language committed against freelance reporter, Leroy Smith.
Alonzo of Upper Kuru Kururu, Soesdyke Linden Highway, pleaded guilty to both charges before Magistrate Ann McLennan at Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Particulars of the first charge stated that on Saturday, August 9 at Umbrella Resort, he unlawfully assaulted Smith.
The other charge stated on the same day at Umbrella Resort, he made use of abusive language, where a breach of the peace may be occasioned.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Deneshwar Maindranaught, told the Court that on the day in question the virtual complainant (VC) and his friends were at the said resort, when he and the accused had a misunderstanding over a piece of PVC pipe.
The Prosecutor said the victim also alleged that Alonzo chucked him. He then reported the matter at the Highway Patrol Base on the Linden Soesdyke Highway where the defendant was arrested and charged.
Alonzo in his defence told the Court that, Smith along with his friends asked to use the Resort and he told them they have to pay. He said they responded that they will not be staying for long, just half an hour.
The unrepresented man said he decided to allow them to utilize the facility, when he saw one the friends pulling out a PVC pipe. After he told them to refrain from doing so, he and the VC had an exchange of words.
The defendant denied chucking Smith. The Magistrate discharged the matter.
