[www.inewsguyana.com] – With the latest salary increase offer from the University of Guyana administration being rejected by the University of Guyana Workers Union (UGWU) and the University of Guyana Senior Staff Association(UGSSA), the student body is set to mediate the next round of negotiations.
President of the University of Guyana Student Society (UGSS) Joshua Griffith said that consequent to the rejection of the latest offer, UGSS “has invited both representatives from the Unions and the administrative members of the Council’s negotiating team to an urgent meeting tripartite where the UGSS will mediate toward the soonest resolution this issue.”
In a release to the media Wednesday night, the unions declared that they had submitted a counter offer of their own to UG’s administration.
The counter offer submitted by the unions would see a 25% increase each successive year for the next three years, whereas the University had proposed a 5% increase for 2015 and 10% for 2016 and 2017.
The next meeting to discuss the counter offer is set for Friday, February 06 at 10:00 hrs. Should there be a consensus coming out of tomorrow’s meeting, UG is expected to be fully operational by Monday morning.
However, while this offer will not be considered until Friday’s meeting, industrial action is expected to continue. This will include a sit and a protest planned for today in front of the Office of the President.
The joint release from the union said that the protest action is scheduled for 12:15 hrs.
