Huawei, a leading global information and communication technology (ICT) solutions provider, today (Friday) announced the launch of its “Telecom Seeds for the Future” programme for the first time in Guyana.
This programme will see Huawei partnering with the University of Guyana (UG), to provide three (3) of the UG’s top ICT and Telecommunication studies students a two-week opportunity during which they will receive the latest in technology training at the company’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China.
Designed to help bridge the gap between what is learned in school and what is practiced in the workplace, the “Seeds for the Future” will help develop ICT talent in Guyana, promote greater understanding of the telecommunications sector and encourage participation in the international ICT community.
It is expected that students participating in the “Seeds for the Future” programme will be given first-hand learning opportunities through interactions with Huawei staff and visits to Huawei laboratories. Apart from studying the theories of the latest in ICT technologies, the students will also receive specific hands-on, practical training in labs.
Students representing UG this year are Mr. Neil Parmeswar Chatterpaul, Mr. Christopher Clarke and Mr. Omatayo Damani Holder.
Vice-Chancellor of UG, Professor Ivelaw Griffith was pleased about the beginning of a new chapter in UG’s collaboration with Huawei. “ICT at the University of Guyana is a major developmental plank which we have to invest in. We are working very closely with our partners like the Ministry of Telecommunications and Huawei to ensure that the imperative for leveraging technology in the development of Guyana is met. I am pleased that our students have been chosen to attend this prestigious programme”.
“Today’s announcement reflects Huawei’s commitment to this region and specifically to the development of Guyana’s ICT industry as a viable economic earner,” said Mr. Vincent Liu, Enterprise Account Director of Huawei.
He said that it is hoped that this programme will additionally further strengthen the growing educational and cultural ties between this region and China.
The students will leave for China on October 31.
