[www.inewsguyana.com] – The University of Guyana (UG) is now the team to beat in seven’s rugby after winning the 2014 edition of the Banks DIH Seven’s Rugby tournament on Sunday, September 21 at the National Park Rugby Field.
Despite being down 12-5 after the first half, UG romped their way to a tightly contested 26-24 win that was decided in the dying moments of the game with Osei McKenzie scoring the deciding try and conversion that won UG the game.
However, earlier in the first half UG’s captain, Ryan Dey displayed some agility moves on his way to scoring UG’s only try in the first half while the experience and muscle of the Yamaha Caribs pounded away at UG with Carl Lewis scoring and converting.
Akeem Fraser also scored in the first half for the Caribs.
The second half for UG was much more of a testament to their speed as they Ran Caribs ragged in the second half to outscore them 21-12 in the half.
Philbert Joseph and Dey scored while Godfrey Brooms converted both times before Osei McKenzie scored and converted for the UG men to give them the win.
Scoring in the second half for Caribs came from Akeem Fraser and Andrew Jarvis while Captain Theodore Henry converted.
The tournament was used as measuring stick to short list players to represent Guyana at the upcoming NACRA championships scheduled for later this year in Mexico.
