United States citizen, Brianna Rodney today pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine and was sentenced to four years in prison by Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry.
She was also fined $30,000. The 25 – year – old woman of Westbury Port New York on June 3 at the Cheddi Jagan International Airtport in Timehri had 4.130 kilograms of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The Prosecutor told the court that the accused came to Guyana two times during this year and stayed at a hotel on Sheriff Street, Georgetown. The court also heard that Rodney was an outgoing passenger at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport where she checked in her suitcase to board the flight.
A search was then conducted on the said suitcase in which six packets of cocaine were found in the false walling of the suitcase. The accused who was not represented by an Attorney told the court that she was fully aware that she was trafficking the cocaine, noting that she saw it as an opportunity since she was going to be paid for taking the items overseas.
