Two men were today sentenced to prison by Magistrate Judy Latchman for the arson attack on the Ministry of Health building on Brickdam between July 16 and 17 of 2009.
Twenty – Four – year old Collin Jones and his accomplice 23 – year old Clayton Westford were sentenced to 66 months imprisonment each for the offence.
Former Health Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who was present at the court proceedings today said he is glad with the way the judicial system works so as to ascertain who were fully responsible for the 2009 fire.
According to Dr. Ramsammy, the building was in existence for more than 100 years and during the fire, various documents were lost which included records relating to professional examinations, financial administration, procurement, payment as well as the history of the building since it was first Queens College.
The blaze which destroyed the entire building was labeled as an act of domestic terrorism by law enforcement authorities.
The fire, believed to have been sparked by channa bombs, completely destroyed the Ministry of Health’s main building and an annexe.
Following the inferno, a bottle containing channa, combustion fuel and a wick was reportedly recovered from the crime scene. [Royan Abrams]
