Twelve organisations receive National Awards

The National Dance Company was among the groups honoured

To usher in the new year (2016) -the commencement of Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary-  the Government of Guyana has honoured twelve cultural and religious organizations with the Medal of Service Award.

In recognizing the contributions of the organizations and groups, President David Granger promised his government would continue to work with all Guyanese to help build public trust by improving and extending education, health, sanitation, water supply, electricity services, affordable housing, social protection to the vulnerable and decent working conditions to everyone.

He noted that public services must also include having happy households in safe communities with adequate facilities for recreation.

Here is the list of awardees:

MEDAL OF SERVICE

  1. AFRICAN CULTURAL AND DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION

For its outstanding service over the past twenty-three years in promoting harmonious race relations, community development and in association with international agencies and countrywide organizations, in advancing the educational, social and economic development of Guyana.

  1. E.R. BURROWES SCHOOL OF ART

In recognition of its sustained contributions in the development of the fine arts.

  1. GUYANA VETERANS LEGION

For long and dedicated service in promoting harmonious relations, support, counselling and accommodation among veterans of World Wars 1 and 2 and the Guyana Defence Force.

  1. MAKUSHI RESEARCH UNIT

For its indefatigable efforts in reviving the indigenous culture of the Makushi People of the North Rupununi by the teaching and translation as well as the publication of books in the Makushi language.

  1. MINGS PRODUCTS AND SERVICES LIMITED

For its twenty-five years of outstanding service to Guyana in the distribution and servicing of quality products and the development of good business, customer and community relations.

  1. NATIONAL DANCE COMPANY

For its long and considerable contribution in the field of dance and its unwavering commitment to develop and promote this art form.

  1. ROSE HALL TOWN YOUTH AND SPORTS CLUB

For outstanding service over the past twenty-five years in the fields of sports, education and community development.

  1. ROADSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH SKILLS TRAINING CENTRE INC.

For sustained, dedicated and outstanding service in the field of education and in community and social work.

  1. SOUTH CENTRAL PEOPLES DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION

For the resource management of Wapishana traditional lands and communities in the south central Rupununi through empowerment of the indigenous peoples, poverty reduction and sustainable use of traditional lands. 

  1. THE THEATRE GUILD OF GUYANA

For its considerable and meritorious contributions in the form of production and performance in the theatre arts.

  1. THE CENTRAL ASSEMBLY OF GOD CHURCH

For its outstanding role in providing religious, social and educational leadership in the community.

  1. GUYANA ISLAMIC TRUST

For its sustained and outstanding service as a social and religious organization and its partnership with local communities in which it constructed three schools.

  1. Honestly I agree with you as to why Mings. That has been a long standing business and he has money too. Why give him money

  2. Look at the list what a joke–show me what these groups have done for the starving children in Tiger Bay –the homeless etc nothing !!!!!!
