Trinidad and Tobago: Government Senator Hafeez Ali has called it quits after finding himself in the midst of a scandal involving sexually explicit videos of him being posted online, and an alleged blackmail plot by the woman responsible for leaking the videos.

No official announcement has been made of his resignation, but local media reports have quoted high-placed government sources as confirming that Ali resigned last Friday.

He had reportedly turned to the Fraud Squad last week informing law enforcement officials that a woman he met online, and to whom he sent nude videos of himself, was trying to extort money from him.

The 43-year-old Senator, who is also a businessman and pilot, claimed that he had already paid her to take down previous videos, but she was threatening to repost them if he did not hand over more money.

Head of Corporate Communications of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, Ellen Lewis, confirmed to the Newsday publication that an investigation had been launched.

“I can confirm that a report was made by a Government Senator in which he is alleging being blackmailed and this report is being investigated by the Fraud Squad,” she told the newspaper.

Ali flew the People’s National Movement (PNM) flag in the Barataria-San Juan constituency in the September 7 general elections. However, he lost to the United National Congress’ Dr. Fuad Khan. (Caribbean360.com)
