[www.inewsguyana.com] – Minister of Governance, Raphael Trotman has dismissed the claims made by the Opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) to the effect that the APNU+AFC government invested some $1B in 52 Luxury vehicles for its ministers and advisers.
Trotman told a post cabinet media briefing on Wednesday, July 29 that no such investment has been made and that government has no intention of doing so.
He explained that when the APNU+AFC assumed office in May, there were reports of a shipment on the way with 52 Luxury vehicles that were purchased under the PPP government but checks made with the importers proved that this was not true.
“We question the wisdom of any government investing in high end luxury vehicles and it was my responsibility to make contact with the Beharry Group of Companies, which is the designated importers of Toyota Vehicles…I was told by a very senior executive there that there is no such shipment and that in fact, one vehicle had been purchased by the previous administration…which landed one week after the elections,” the Governance Minister said.
He further clarified that, “The Beharry Group and all of the known importers of high end vehicles…deny any knowledge of any vehicles purchased whether by the past administration or this. But we’re not going to do anything as ridiculous as invest in 52 vehicles for ourselves within entertainment systems and leather seats and so forth.”
Trotman made it clear that government officials will continue to use the vehicles of the former administration until such time that it needs to be changed.
