Top seeds dominate first night of Road to Mecca II

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Trinity Grid Holding (TGH) Pacesetters opened their campaign with a 72-36 win over the Wismar Piston on the first night of the Road to Mecca National Club Basketball Championships on Sunday, February 15 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).

Shawn Gillis scored a team high 13 points for the Pacesetters along with dishing out seven assists while Randy Richardson noted a double-double with 11 points and 13. Michael Turner also had 12 points in the win.

Plaisance Guardians toppled Amelia Ward Jets to win 66-56 in a very physical encounter. The contest was nothing short of physical as both teams hacked at each other in the paint allowing no easy buckets.

Plaisance trailed 49-42 heading into the final quarter but rallied to pull away in the final three minutes with key defensive stops.

Nikkoloi Smith scored a game high 21 points for Plaisance along with five assists in the win. Trenton Woolford added 14 points while Ron Campbell who had to work hard down low ended with 12 points.

Alister Webster scored a team high 15 points while crashing the glass for 14 rebounds. Adrain Webster also had a double-double in the loss with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

The Kashif and Shanghai Kings defeated the Georgetown Masters 77-61 for an easy win as Abdulla Hamid ended with 18 points and eight rebounds while Marvin Hartman had 13 points and four steals in the win.

Former national point guard, Lugard Mohan scored a game high of 23 points in the losing effort while Kenrick Thomas and Juha Debby scored 10 points a apiece.

Meanwhile in the first game of the evening, Pepsi Sonics routed the Half Mile Bulls 77-60 behind Jason Squires 26 points.

Leading the way for the Bulls was Terron Welch with 19 points while Dennis Niles had 15 points in the loss. The tournament will continue on February 18.
