[www.inewsguyana.com] – Shadow Legal Affairs Minister and Parliamentarian for the main Opposition Party, Basil Williams has criticized the Private Sector Commission (PSC) for continuously supporting the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP), even when they are wrong.

Williams told a news conference on Friday, January 16 that the PSC is only interested in furthering its own business interest. He was at the time responding to the statement by Chairman of Trade and Investment of the PSC, Ramesh Dookhoo, who recently revealed that the Private Sector hates elections.

“The Private Sector has never shown any courage to descent from the views of this government and the actions of this government. They have never come out and say PPP you’re wrong, Mr President, you’re wrong. They don’t do that and they are primarily motivated by their own business interest,” Williams said.

He further noted, “They want elections to come and be over with so that they could get back to normal and to the business of making money.”

Meanwhile, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Parliamentarian, James Bond defended the PSC, pointing out that Dookhoo’s remarks should not be seen as the views of the Commission itself.

Bond reminded that in the past, the PSC officially called for the holding of Local Government Elections and General and Regional Elections.

“So if Mr Dookhoo is of the opinion that he does not want an election, I think that is Mr Dookhoo’s view. But I think certain members of the Private Sector Commission are very guarded of our democracy and would like to see elections, both local and national and that’s from the Private Sector Commission,” Bond stated.

On a separate note, the APNU reiterated its call for President Donald Ramotar to set a date for the general and regional elections. Williams said, “They [PPP] are mortally afraid of these elections, that’s why they’re not calling elections. The President and PPP have been hurt by proroguing this Parliament. They want to wait to come out for it.”

Additionally, Bond believes that a stronger message needs to be sent for the President to announce a date.

“The APNU has done a fantastic job at holding the PPP’s feet to the fire, it’s now time that the citizens more so the young people should rally behind the APNU to push this Government to hold elections,” Bond told Reporters.

The President has since promised to announce a date “soon.”

  2. The fact is that APNU would have willfully choose not to read articles that were publish against the government by the private sector. The private had join hands with the said APNU during the call for local government elections. In return the private sector were punished by the combine political opposition when they utilise their one seat majority and voted down critical security and financial legislation.
