[www.inewsguyana.com] – Prime Minister Samuel Hinds says that any decision being made for him to return as the Prime Ministerial Candidate for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) in the May 11 polls will not be taken by him.
Hinds, who is originally from the Civic Party, has been holding the portfolio of Prime Minister since 1992. This was when the PPP, which had coalesced with the Civic took office.
The arrangement when the coalition between the two parties was formed was that the Presidential Candidacy would go to the PPP and Civic would have the Prime Ministerial post.
Hinds told Reporters in a recent interview that while he is “always ready to serve” the decision for him to return in that capacity is not up to him.He said “the decision is my fellow Guyanese decision…the decision is not mine.”
Another member of the Civic party who is being touted as a possible replacement for Hinds is Foreign Affairs Minister Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett.
She however told Reporters that she has considered taking up the post. Birkett, responding to questions from the media at a press conference on February 04 said she has not given any thought to the issue. This is despite public speculation being rife about her possible appointment to the post.
“I have not given any consideration to that thought. There is a process in our party with respect to that…those processes have always worked well and I have every confidence it will work well again,” said the Foreign Affairs Minister.
Observers have noted that Presidential Advisor on Governance Gail Teixeira, Birkett or Junior Finance Minister, Juan Edghill, would be ideal for the post given their long service to the Party.
