Police in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) are investigating the murder of a 17-year-old miner who was shot dead by a licensed firearm holder at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni River on Sunday.
Dead is Dane Jerrick of Lot 1 A Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
According to Police reports, around 03:30h on the day in question at Puruni Landing, Mazaruni River, Jerrick was shot in the lower back allegedly by a licensed firearm holder.
However, the teen’s uncle George Jerrick told INews that his family was told by eyewitnesses that his nephew and a truck driver had an argument which led to a fight.
During the fight, Jerrick in an effort to escape the blows he was receiving from the truck operator, began running.
It is alleged that someone who was in the crowd at the time began shouting “thief, thief” and it was then the firearm holder whipped out his gun and shot the victim.
The suspect is currently in police custody and the weapon has been lodged.
The teen’s body was transported to the Lyken Funeral Home to await an autopsy, which is scheduled for today (Monday).
