A 19-year-old lad was last evening killed during a hit-and-run accident on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway in the vicinity of Kairuni.
The accident occurred at around 21:30hrs.
The victim has been identified as Ryan Boodhoo of Kuru Kururu Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Reports are that Boodhoo and two others were walking along the eastern side of the said road proceeding south when they heard a vehicle approaching from behind.
One of the persons in the group said he looked back and observed that the vehicle was approaching at a fast rate of speed, which caused him to pull the person next to him to safety.
However, the teenager was hit from behind by the vehicle, which then drove away in a southern direction.
The pedestrian fell onto the road surface where he received injuries about the body.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition by the police and public-spirited citizens, placed into a passing vehicle and taken to the MacKenzie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The vehicle in the accident has not yet been identified.
