Two men- one being a teen- appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s court on Monday, and were charged for the murder of a 16-year-old Covent Garden student.
Andy Peters, 17, and Shannon Cox, 21, were not required to plead to the indictable charge which stated that on April 29 2017, at Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, they murdered Brian Yearwood.
The Chief Magistrate remanded the duo to prison and they are expected to re-appear on May 22 2017.
On the night of the incident, Yearwood, of lot 69 Public Road, Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD) was stabbed to death in the compound of the Covent Garden Nursery School where a school concert was being held.
According to reports, the teen was stabbed to his chest allegedly by Peters, who is said to reside in Kaneville, EBD, at some time around 20:00hrs.
Based on police reports, an officer who was present at the concert with a relative responded immediately, and with the assistance of other persons, rushed the victim to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
When INews had visited Yearwood’s home, his grieving mother, Beverley Yearwood related that she had dropped her son off at the school around 17:00hrs on Saturday and was made aware of his tragic death when his friend informed her around midnight.
She said family members immediately went to the hospital, where they saw her son’s motionless body lying on a stretcher.
The 16-year-old was described by his family as an easy-going and jovial individual. He leaves to mourn his parents and five siblings, along with other relatives and friends. (Ramona Luthi)
