[www.inewsguyana.com] – A lay-up by Sports Journalist Edison Jefford ensured Team Bond a tense 59-58 victory over Team Toney when the ‘Respect the Game’ Charity basketball event was held on Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
With approximately 30 seconds left, Jefford weaved his way through a couple of defenders to finish at the rim, to the jubilation of his teammates.
The lay-up was Jefford’s second in the game with both his shots coming in the fourth quarter. Rawle Toney would miss a three pointer with 1.5 seconds left, which would have won the game.
However, Toney’s team was ahead at the end of the third period by 12 points with the organisers agreeing to level the score at 49 before the start of the third in order to make the game more competitive.
Meanwhile, Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai was a dunking machine, throwing down three insane jams; one over Jefford for the poster dunk.
Kanhai ended with a game high 15 points while Toney had 12 to lead Team Toney in the loss.
Christopher Barnwell was Team Bond’s top scorer with 10 points while James Bond had six in the win.
In the exhibition games before, UG defeated Qualfon 79 – 44, Starr’s Computer defeated the Diplomatic Corps 65-51 and St Roses High defeated St Stanislaus College 19-13.
