[www.inewsguyana.com] – A Taxi Driver of East La Penitence Squatting Area, Georgetown, was remanded to prison on two counts of robbery under arms.
Alistair Norton, 37, made his appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and denied both charges, one of which alleged that on December 23, 2014 at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, being in the company of others and armed with a gun he robbed Diane Ramroop of cash $2M, property of Hemchand Narine.
Particulars of the other charge stated that on the same day at Vryheid’s Lust, being in company of others armed with a gun, he robbed Hemchand Narine of one .32 revolver and six rounds of .32 ammunition, together valued $263,000.
Police Prosecutor Bharat Mangru told the Court that both victims went to the bank and as they were about to enter their yard, the accused and another pounced on them, escaping with the money and gun.
The Court heard that after Norton was arrested, he confessed to the police that he was part of a gang that robbed Narine and Ramroop and that he was the driver of the getaway car.
The Prosecutor successfully opposed bail on the grounds of the seriousness, prevalence of the offence. Bail was denied and the matter was transferred to Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on March 27.
