This case was heard in-camera before Magistrate Judy Latchman, away from the prying ears of the public earlier today (Wednesday).
According to reports reaching INews, the defendant was charged for sexually assaulting the victim under the age of sixteen. The incident occurred between June 1, 2017 and June 30, 2017 in the Georgetown area.
On the day in question, it is alleged that the mother of the child hired the taxi driver to pick up the victim from an Islamic school which she attends and take her home. Upon picking the subject up, the taxi driver allegedly proceeded to unzip her clothing and attempted to fondle her inappropriately before taking her home as instructed.
The traumatised victim then disclosed the incident to her mother some time later, which resulted in police reports being made, leading to the arrest of the defendant who was slapped with the charge presently before the courts.
Though details surrounding the incident remain vague, INews understands that the accused was represented by attorney-at-law Sase Gunraj who managed to secure bail for his client in the sum of $150,000. The accused is slated to return to court on October 5, 2017.
