[www.inewsguyana.com] – Government’s gift to Athletics in Guyana, the Synthetic Athletic Track at Leonora, West Coast Demerara is beginning to take shape with the rubberized surface already being sealed to asphalt surface.
During a site visit on Friday, iNews Sport observed that half of the 400 meter surface was already covered by the rubberized matting about 5mm high.
Speaking with the representative of the German companycontracted to lay the surface BSW,Regupol’sDtetmerJakel, he indicated that the completion of the laying of the rubberized material will take a further two days provided that sunshine remains.
“Then on top of the rubber comes the sealer because the rubber is open pore, so then comes the sealer and then comes a 3mm self leveling materials from both sides and then we throw on the surface so that will be a IAFF standard Olympic running track, the same like in Barbados and Jamaica, everywhere”, Jakel said.
He indicated too that rains are the only factor that can halt the laying of the surface as if the rubber is wet, it will not stick.
However, once wet, the BSW Regupol Representativeindicated that sunshine can dry it off the rubberized layer and works can resume.
On his visit, Sport Minister Dr. Frank Anthony expressed pleasure at the pace of works, indicating that the German team is working to standard.
“We are happy that we are making this kind of progress and once people see themselves that the track is in, they would know that we are nearing completion,” the sport Minister said.
When complete, the surface will boast an international association of athletics federations (IAAF) accredited facility capable of hosting track and field events.
