[www.inewsguyana.com] – Guyana has acquired a Synthetic Hockey pitch in order to aid teams which are expected to participate in international tournaments.
According to President of the Guyana Hockey Board, Phillip Fernandes the surface is already installed at the GCC Ground Bourda and is a great achievement for the sport.
He said recently in the media that it is expected to be unveiled during the first quarter of the coming year as they are awaiting the installation of the lights at the venue.
He went on to explain that the cost of the surface which is one eighth the size of an international field reaches in the vicinity of $3million. He indicated that through several fundraising events, hikers hockey club were the main factors behind the installation of the sand based facility.
Aroydy Branford, Jamarj Assanah, Omar Hopkinson, Andrew Stewart and Steven Xavier are all part of a squad shortlisted for next April’s indoor pan American cup, scheduled for Montevideo, Uruguay, expected to commence training shortly.
The Guyana Hockey Board through a release has shortlisted a squad of 36 local male players to begin preparations for the April 7 to 13 tournament.
The last time Guyana competed in an indoor pan am cup was back in 2010 have been absent from the international scene due to funding.
Kevin Spencer, Aderemi Simon and Shane Samuels are all some of the persons named in the squad that will seek the knowledge of Former National Captain Devin Munroe, as newly appointed National men’s coach Robert Fernandes is tasked with preparing the team.
