A scuffle yesterday between a suspected criminal, who is wanted for a number of break and enter as well as larceny charges, and police ranks resulted in the suspect allegedly being shot by one of the ranks.
The suspect is presently under police guard at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, Berbice, and an investigation into the shooting has been launched by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) of the Guyana Police Force.
INews understands that around 03:00hrs yesterday, the police received a tip-off as to the whereabouts of the wanted man. He was said to have been in a house at Savannah Park in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Ranks on a mobile patrol under the command of a subordinate officer responded and upon arrival at that location the suspect was seen by the policemen.
Reports are that during the process of arresting the man, a scuffle between him and police ranks ensued. The suspect was reportedly shot after he resisted arrest.
INews was told by a police source that the suspect still managed to escape and headed into some nearby bushes. And although ranks began searching for the injured man he could not be located.
However, shortly after, the suspect was found at the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he had been admitted as a patient with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.
