[www.inewsguyana.com] – Former Education Minister, Shaik Baksh will oversee the operations of the Board of Directors for the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) as the new Chairman following his appointment on July 1 by Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy.
However, the Board still has an outstanding appointment to make and is hoping this will be done in a matter of weeks.
During a telephone interview with iNews, Dr. Ramsammy said that an individual was selected to fill the last board member position; however, they are now awaiting confirmation from the person to make the appointment and announcement.
Even though the Board is one member short, it is functional with great expectations for the remainder of the year, the Agriculture Minister said.
The other members of the Board include, Dunstan Barrow, Dr. Dindyal Persaud, Keith Burrowes, Badri Persaud and Geeta Singh-Knight.
The current Chief Executive officer, Dr. Raj Singh, sits on the Board as an ex-officio member.
Under the new management, Minister Ramsammy expects the implementation of the new strategic plan that is expected to turn the industry around; attaining the 2014 target of 216,000 tons; a target that he believes will be surpassed.
He also expects 2,500 acres of lands to be converted for mechanization and the operation of two pumps on the Upper Corentyne area and ensuring that the Skeldon sugar factory is better prepared to achieve its target.
The Agriculture Minister is optimistic that these targets will be met and the industry will continue to thrive.
