Commander of “G” Division (Essequibo Islands and Coast), Kevin Adonis, has reported that there have been several reports of sexual offences being committed in his division which have been engaging the attention of his team.
According to Commander Adonis, there are reports of many cases of sexual offences in Region Two, but persons hesitate in reporting them to the police for their own personal reasons.
Nevertheless, he told INews that for the cases which come to the attention of law enforcement officials, “G” Division has been able to apprehend and prosecute the perpetrators, simultaneously partnering with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Essequibo to ensure that victims receive the necessary help in recovering from those horrific ordeals.
According to Commander Adonis, it was only last week that ranks from his Division arrested and charged a 71-year-old man for allegedly raping his teenage grand-daughter.
Adonis posited that usually with regards to any sexual offences committed, the law enforcement officials would have to seek legal advice on the way forward before they proceed.
He noted that at present, investigations are on-going into a few other such cases, including one in which it is being alleged that a Toshao from an Amerindian Community is molesting a juvenile.
The Commander added that he, along with his team, would be seeking to ensure that all such reports are thoroughly investigated and the necessary advice is sought where necessary.
