Regions 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are experiencing a paddy bug infestation during this second rice crop.
General Manager of the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) Jagnarine Singh says Region Two had suffered this infestation during the first crop and now again in this crop.
In this regard, the GRDB is working with the farmers in the affected areas to try to manage the bugs.
The assistance is being provided through technical support and the provision of pesticides.
Singh posited that the cause of this infestation could be the change in weather coupled with poor drainage and maintenance of the fields.
However, he is optimistic that the infestation will have minimum to no effect on the overall production of rice this crop, following their intervention to control it.
