All eligible Guyanese in towns, NDCs and Toshao Councils will have the opportunity to let their voices be heard by casting their votes in the March 18 Local Government Elections.

“Tuesday is Nominations Day here in the region and both political entities are working assiduously to ensure that their candidates are ready and the necessary requirements are met,” the Chairman said.
Ashley said that, so far, he’s aware of the PPP/C contesting and the APNU-AFC coalition contesting for both the municipality of Mabaruma and the local authority of the Maparkai sub-region which is an NDC (Neighbourhood Democratic Council).
Other communities in Region One are managed by Toshaos and councils, as directed under the Amerindian (Indigenous People’s) Act of 2006.
Chairman Ashley remarked that GECOM is currently in the process of recruiting their staff to ensure that all necessary mechanisms are in place for the elections.
This year’s Local Government Elections will be the first since 1994.
