At least one person has succumbed to injuries sustained in Saturday evening’s accident on Regent and Albert Streets, Georgetown, involving a Route 40 (Kitty/Stabroek) minibus and a motorcycle.
The dead man has been identified as Dillon Linton, 21, of Campbellville, Georgetown, who was a passenger in the speeding minibus.
Several other persons remain hospitalised, including Ronald Maxwell, 23, of Kitty, Georgetown, the conductor of the ill-fated minibus; Manfro Jeffery, 23, of Trinidad and Tobago and Trevor Phillips, 22, of North Sophia, Greater Georgetown. Several other passengers and the motorcyclist remain unidentified.
Information reaching INews revealed that the driver of the minibus, Timothy Andrews, a serving member of the Guyana Police Force who was also injured in the accident, was discharged from the hospital, but was placed under close arrest.
On Saturday evening, the minibus, BTT 7944, which was reportedly “drag racing”, attempted to overtake another minibus and collided with a motorcycle, toppling several times before crashing into a utility pole in the vicinity of Albert and Regent Streets.
Several beer bottles were seen at the crash site and according to some persons at the crash site, both the driver and conductor were seen consuming alcohol earlier in the day.
