[www.inewsguyana.com] – As he gave his final speech to officers of the Guyana Defence Force, Rear Admiral Gary Best has urged the new Chief – of – Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips to be strong and hold his ground during moments of controversy.
Rear Admiral Best was given an honorary farewell this afternoon, Tuesday September 17 in the form of a March past and gun salute at the Force’s Base Camp Ayanganna.
Present at the ceremony was Commander – in – Chief of the Armed Forces, President Donald Ramotar, Government officials, opposition members and overseas guests, among others.
“To the new Chief of Staff, Brigadier Mark Phillips, your greatest test is not where you stand in a good moment, you greatest test is where you stand in times of challenge and controversy. You will have to be strong and hold your ground. You will have many testing moments. However, be inspired by your desire to lead and develop further, the Guyana Defence Force,” Rear Admiral Best said.
Rear Admiral Best assumed the Command of the Guyana Defence Force on September 28, 2007. In his advice to army officers, he urged them to execute their duties in a manner which will garner the respect of the citizens of this country and to confer to the traditional values of the Defence Force.
Additionally, he noted that a re – prioritization of the resources of the Force is necessary.
Rear Admiral Best admitted that it was not an easy task being the Chief of Staff. However, he said if he has the chance, he will do it all over again.
