[www.inewsguyana.com] – The National School Championships has been abandoned due to excessive rainfall that left the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) ground, Base Camp Ayanganna looking like a river.
In a joint statement by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education as well as the Management Committee of the event, the organisers thanked all the stakeholders for their continued support.
“We would like to express our gratitude to all sponsors and stakeholders and pledge our continued commitment toward the hosting of this event in the future. We anticipate your support in the future in continuing to make this event the premier junior competition in Guyana.”
The event got off to an exhilarating start when Tevin Garraway broke the boy’s under-20 100 metres record in a devastating fashion. North Georgetown was also crowned champs of the swimming on their to a probable successful title defence.
The event was abandoned three times before due to inclement weather in 1961, 1964 and 1995.
