[www.inewsguyana.com] – A minibus driver of Lot 11 Durban Street, Georgetown, charged with assaulting News Update’s (Channel 65) reporter and news anchor was placed on self bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on Tuesday, May 19.
Terry Campbell pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that on May 16 at Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Courdel Jones.
It is reported that Campbell is one of the persons held for assaulting Jones not far from his Oronoque Street, Georgetown office. According to reports, Campbell and other occupants in the minibus were making racial remarks when an elderly woman intervened. However, they started to argue with her and Jones rose in her defence.
After hearing the comments made by Jones, Campbell stopped the bus he was driving, exited and dealt Jones several cuffs to his face.
According to Jones the conductor and other passengers also participated in beating him. Campbell’s Attorney told the court that the matter will be settled out of court, but this was refuted by Jones.
The driver was bonded to keep the peace and the matter was transferred before Magistrate Annette Singh for June 9.

There are more and more Mini bus operators who are becoming more and more violent. There should be better standards DEMANDED by Law Enforcement. These Mini Bus operators should be made to display their names and photographs in the mini bus which I observe in other Caribbean countries. Passengers should be treated with courtesy and protection from any assault. I was oncea victim myself.
Time to introduce legislation outlawing ” bias” speech and actions.
