The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has received 270 complaints for the first half of this year with the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) taking the biggest share.
Of the 270 complaints filed, 161 were against the Guyana Power and Light while 70 were filed against GT&T, 37 against GWI and two against Digicel.
In addressing the complaints, the PUC was able to recover more than $300,000 for some of the complainants. Of that amount $191,000 came from GPL.
During an interview, Engineer attached to the PUC, Nikita Somwaru, revealed that the Commission also addressed a huge number of complaints pertaining to meter tampering.
Somwaru explained that the PUC has been very successful in recouping their losses. He added that the commission has been receiving moderate responses from the utility companies when a complaint is made against them.
The PUC will continue to host its monthly community outreaches and consumers with problems are urged to bring these to their attention so that they can be resolved. [Akash Ramlackhan]
