A prison officer was on Monday released on G$150,000 bail after denying a charge of smuggling a prohibited drug into the premises of the Camp Street Prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
It is alleged that Stephan Sobers on March 28, 2017 smuggled 138 grams of cannabis into the penitentiary.
In a bail application, the court heard that Sobers was 23 years old and lived on the East Bank of Essequibo.
Prosecutor Arvin Moore made no objection to bail. Prosecutor Moore told the court that the prison officer has lodged his travel documents with Police.
Bail was granted in the sum of G$150,000, and Sobers was ordered to report every Friday to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at 09:00 h.
The matter will continue on April 24 at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
