Some six years after escaping from the New Amsterdam Prison, Rickford LaFleur was recently arrested by law enforcement authorities in neighbouring Suriname.
The 43-year-old wanted man was among four prisoners who escaped from the penitentiary on June 11, 2011. After being recaptured in the neighbouring country, he was handed over to local authorities.
“He was escorted to Guyana earlier on Thursday and is presently in custody at the New Amsterdam Prison,” the Police said in a statement.
At the time of his escape, LaFleur was on remand for murder and possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
LaFleur, also called “Rickford Williams”, of Circle Street, Skeldon, Berbice, was charged with the murder of another prisoner, called “Clato” at the New Amsterdam facility.
He was a known character and reportedly had several other matters before the courts including high profile robberies.
